Chief Examiner

Rockschool is the leading International Music and Performance Arts exams board. Based in SW London we operate in 36 countries around the world organising, adjudicating and certificating over 45,000 music, theory and performing arts exams annually.

The Role

The Chief Examiner will lead the global Rockschool (RSL) exams team of 100+ freelance examiners and moderators who examine & standardise candidates in Rock and Pop music, Performance Arts (musical theatre and dance) and Vocational Music Qualifications throughout the world and input and advise on all aspects of syllabus and examining.

This is a challenging role. Our culture is fast paced, with a commitment to exceptionally high standards.  As Chief Examiner your key responsibilities will be to:

  • Quickly understand how RSL works, its techniques, culture and standards
  • Ensure that the RSL exams are conducted to the appropriate standard
  • Manage all aspects of the Rockschool Examiners. Including:The Chief Examiner will be expected to remain close to the examining process and personally conduct a small number of      RSL exams
    • Recruiting and training Examiners
    • Standardising exams and examiners
    • Standardising international exams and examiners
    • Exam script assessment and moderation
    • Overseeing the moderation of RSL vocational qualifications
    • Coach, develop or discipline examiners as appropriate
  • Collate performance criteria/certificates
  • Regularly update the examiners materials
  • Input into all new syllabi and write syllabus guides
  • Oversee the appeals process
  • Lead the examiners conferences
  • Engage in international travel as appropriate
  • Manage the examiners for the international business
  • Understand and advise on the relevant academic rules, regulations and policies
  • Participate, as a key member of the Senior Rockschool team, in the development and implementation of the global strategic plan.

You will have:

  • A degree level education. Additional qualifications are desirable
  • Considerable examining/assessment/syllabi and quality assurance experience in conjunction with a sound knowledge of the education sector, both compulsory and post-compulsory
  • High level people management skills
  • Experience of managing a disparate team
  • A good understanding of the music, theatre and dance industry and associated pedagogy
  • Experience of examining across a wide range of instruments is essential and a knowledge of dance/theatre performance styles would be beneficial
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including active listening and the ability to communicate effectively and persuasively with stakeholders across the organisation and our partners
  • A good grasp of technology and IT skills, and an ability to use technology to streamline and develop this area of the business
