History & People

In 1979, alarmed at the indifferent quality of what was being presented as appropriate education and professional training in dance, musical theatre and the performing arts, a number of eminent artists met with representatives of the leading industry organisations to discuss how the sector could work together to ensure high standards of provision. What emerged was CDET. During 2017/18, with industry support, the CDET repositioned as the Council for Dance, Drama and Musical Theatre (CDMT).

Over the years CDMT has become the first point of contact for employers, students and teachers seeking information about quality education, training and assessment in dance, drama, musical theatre and the performing arts across the UK. CDMT also liaises with government authorities to ensure that its members’ views are represented strongly at all levels of national and international decision making.

Our Board draws on the expertise of key stakeholders from the performing arts world including: Equity; UK Theatre; the Society of London Theatre (SOLT); representatives from international dance companies, vocational schools and awarding organisations; and independent professionals such as casting directors, educationists and legal specialists.
These direct links to industry place CDMT in the strongest possible position to lobby on issues of funding and policy affecting performing arts’ provision, and ensure our position at the forefront of innovation in education, assessment and training.
